Bhedaghat is a town and a nagar panchayat in Jabalpur district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is situated by the side of river Narmada and is approximately 20 km from Jabalpur city. Its most famous sights are the Dhuandhar Falls, Marble Rocks, and its Chaunsath Yogini temple.

 

The temple is one of the major extant yogini temples containing carvings of eighty-one yoginis, female deities and their female worshippers. It was built in the 10th century under the Kalachuris. It commands a view of the whole area around and of the river flowing through the marble rocks.

 

Another major attraction is a waterfall known as Dhuandhar, which looks like smoke coming out of the river and therefore it got its name as "Dhuan(smoke)-dhar(flow of water)". At Bandar Kodini ("the monkey's leap"), when one travels in between the marble rocks in a boat, the mountains at both the sides at one point come so close that the monkeys are able to jump across them, hence the name. In a moonlit night, the travel between the marble rock mountains in a boat on the river Narmada is one of the popular tourist attractions here.

The river has carved the soft marble, creating a beautiful gorge of about 8 km in length. It is a popular Indian tourist destination.

 


The area has many tourist activities. There is a cable car to take visitors across the gorge, row boats for guided tours of the river downstream of the falls, and many small shops filled with crafts made from the local materials. The most beautiful time for boating is during Purnima; especially during Kojagari Puja on Sharad Purnima, wherein boating is considered healing for the body and soul.

On Kaumudi celebration as it is also called; it's believed that the moon showers elixir or Amrit on Earth through its beams, as the moon and the earth are at closer distance on Sharad Purnima night, and due to this, the moonlight has magical healing properties which are said to nourish the body and soul of an individual. The moonlight on Purnima has magic healing properties, which is why it's acknowledged to shower Amrit Varsha (Elixir shower) on the Narmada river which meanders through the pristine rocks. Both bathing and boating are also considered very sacred on Kartik Purnima in the holy Kartik (month).

Tripuri Purnima or Tripurari Purnima derives its name from Tripurari - the foe of the demon Tripurasura. In some legends of Kartik Purnima, the term is used to denote the three demon sons of Tārakāsura. Tripurari is an epithet of god Shiva. Shiva in his form as Tripurantaka ("Killer of Tripurasura") killed Tripurasura on this day.

 Tripurasura had conquered the whole world and defeated the gods and also created three cities in space, together called "Tripura". The killing of the demon(s) and destruction of his/their cities with a single arrow - by Shiva overjoyed the gods and they declared the day as a festival of illuminations. This day is also called "Dev-Diwali"—the Diwali of the gods. Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights.
 

Kartik Purnima is also the birthday of Matsya, god Vishnu's fish-incarnation (avatar). It is also the birthday of Vrinda, the personification of the Tulsi plant and of Kartikeya, the god of war and son of Shiva. This day is also considered special for goddess Radha, the lover and eternal consort of god Krishna. It is believed that Krishna and Radha danced rasa and Krishna worshipped Radha on this day. This day is also dedicated to the pitrs, dead ancestors.

The festival has even more significance when the day falls in the Nakshatra (lunar mansion) Krittika and is then called Maha Kartik. The nakshatra is Bharani, the results are stated to be special. If it is Rohini nakshatra, then the fruitful results are even more. Any philanthropic act on this day is supposed to bring benefits and blessings equal to the performing of ten yajnas (sacrifices).

In Hindu astrology, Kṛttikā is the third of the 27 nakṣatras. It is ruled by Sun. Under the traditional Hindu principle of naming individuals according to their Ascendant/Lagna nakṣatra, the following Sanskrit syllables correspond with this nakṣatra, and would belong at the beginning of the first name of an individual born under it: A (अ), I (ई), U (उ) and E (ए).

Kartikeya is known by numerous names in ancient and medieval texts of the Indian culture. Most common among these are Murugan, Kumara, Skanda, and Subrahmanya. Others include Aaiyyan, Cheyyon, Senthil, Vēlaṇ, Swaminatha ("ruler of the gods", from -natha king), śaravaṇabhava ("born amongst the reeds"), Arumugam or ṣaṇmukha ("six-faced"), Dandapani ("wielder of the mace", from -pani hand), Guha (cave, secret) or Guruguha (cave-teacher), Kadhirvelan, Kandhan, Vishakha and Mahasena.

 In ancient coins where the inscription has survived along with his images, his names appear as Kumara, Brahmanya or Brahmanyadeva. On some ancient Indo-Scythian coins, his names appear in Greek script as Skanda, Kumara and Vishaka. In ancient statues, he appears as Mahasena, Skanda and Vishakha.

Skanda is derived from skanḍr-, which means "leaper or attacker".

In Kalidasa’s epic poem Kumarasambhava (“The Birth of the War God”; 5th century CE), as in most versions of the story, the gods wished for Skanda to be born in order to destroy the demon Taraka, who had been granted a boon that he could be killed only by a son of Shiva. They sent Parvati to induce Shiva to marry her. Shiva, however, was lost in meditation and was not attracted to Parvati until he was struck by an arrow from the bow of Kama, the god of love, whom he immediately burned to ashes. After many years of abstinence, Shiva’s seed was so strong that the gods, fearing the result, sent Agni, the god of fire, to interrupt Shiva’s amorous play with Parvati. Agni received the seed and dropped it into the Ganges, where Skanda was born.
 

Kartikeya means "of the Krittikas". This epithet is also linked to his birth. After he appears on the banks of the River Ganges, he is seen by the six of the seven brightest stars cluster in the night sky called Krittikas in Hindu texts (called Pleiades in Greek texts). These six mothers all want to take care of him and nurse baby Kartikeya. Kartikeya ends the argument by growing five more heads to have a total of six heads so he can look at all six mothers, and let them each nurse one. The six Krittikas are Śiva, Sambhūti, Prīti, Sannati, Anasūya and Kṣamā.

The main rituals performed by devotees consist of kartik snan (taking a holy bath in the Ganges during Kartika) and deepdan (offering of oil lighted lamps) to Ganga in the evening. The Ganga aarti is also performed in the evening.

The 5 day festivals starts on Prabodhini Ekadashi (11th lunar day of Kartika) and concludes on Kartik Poornima. Besides a religious role, the festival is also the occasion when the martyrs are remembered at the ghats by worshipping Ganga and lighting lamps watching the aarti. This is organized by Ganga Seva Nidhi when wreaths are placed at Amar Jawan Jyoti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and also at the adjoining Rajendra Prasad Ghat by police officials of the Varanasi District, 39 Gorkha Training Centre, 95 CRPF battalion, 4 Air Force Selection Board and 7 UP battalion of NCC (naval), Benares Hindu University (BHU). The traditional last post is also performed by all the three armed forces (Army, Navy and Air force), followed by a closing ceremony, where sky lamps are lit. Patriotic songs, hymns, and bhajans are sung and the Bhagirath Shourya Samman awards are presented.

 Tulsi Stuti or Tulsi praise is in Sanskrit. Bhagwan Narayan had said that this Stuti is done by Bhagwan ShriHari. First Bhagwan ShriHari performed pooja of Devi Tulsi and then he praised Devi Tulsi. He said: Wise people call a place as ‘Vrinda Van‘where Vrinda (Tulsi) and other Vrinda type trees grow together. I worship my beloved Tulsi who is famous by the name “Vrinda”. She appeared in Vrindavan in very old times. Hence she is called as Vrindavani. I worship Devi Vrindavani. She is being worshiped among many trees. Hence she is called as “Vishwapoojita”. Thus I worship her who is being worshiped by many in the world. Devi Tulsi has made the entire world pious by her presence; I worship Such “Vishwapawani” (Devi Tulsi) and remember her. Even we worship Gods with many flowers they get pleased when they are offered Tulsi patra (leaf of Holy Tulsi). Hence Devi Tulsi is called as “Pushpasara”. In deep sorrow I worship her to bless me with the Darshan. Devotee becomes happy when he finds Tulsi patra. Thus she makes all devotees happy and she has been called and famous as “Nandini” by them. I request her to bless me now. She can’t be compared in the whole world (meaning of the word “tulana”). As such she has become by the name “Tulsi”. I bow to her. That very pious Devi Tulsi is inseparable from God Shrikrishna as such she is famous as “Krishnajivani’. I request such Devi Tulsi to protect my life.

कार्तिक पूर्णिमा को श्रीहरि ने प्रलय काल में चार वेदों की रक्षा के लिए मत्स्यावतार लिया था। इसी पूर्णिमा के दिन भगवान भोलेनाथ ने त्रिपुरासुर नामक राक्षस का वध किया और त्रिपुरारी के नाम से जाने गये। इसी पूर्णिमा के दिन बैकुंठधाम में श्रीतुलसी का प्रकाट्य हुआ। देवी तुलसी का पृथ्वी पर जन्म हुआ। इसलिए इस दिन भी तुलसी जी की अराधना करना चाहिए।

The one who reads with peace,

This octet on Hari,

Which is the destroyer of sorrow,

Would definitely reach the world of Vishnu,
